Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero

Son of the last Nicaraguan Dictador, Anastasio Somoza Debayle.

During his father’s rule, he was in charge of the School of Basic Training of the Infantry of the National Guard, whose soldiers –while fighting the Sandinista guerrillas– were responsible for the violation of human rights of civilians and prisoners.

From September 1978 until the overthrow of the dictatorship on July 17, 1979, he ordered the murder of civilians and the bombing with artillery and airplanes of the main cities of Nicaragua which had fallen into hands of popular forces directed by Sandinistas. Under his rule, the National Guard murdered 50,000 Nicaraguan citizens. Soon after the Sandinista victory he went into exile in Guatemala and later the United States. In 2000 he announced his intention to return to Nicaragua.
