David Atlee Phillips

Born in Texas in the United States on October 31, 1922. Alias: Maurice Bishop. From 1943 to 1945, he worked in the Information and Analysis Section of the US Air Force. From 1948 to 1954 he was a newspaper publisher. From 1958 to 1961 he worked in public relations for the State Department. In 1950 he was recruited to work as an undercover CIA operative in Chile. In 1954 he was part of the group that directed the overthrow of President Jacobo Arbenz in Guatemala. Between 1958 and 1960, he was an undercover CIA agent in Cuba, using the office of public relations in Havana as his cover. There, he was linked to journalistic and intellectual circles. In 1961 he directed the psychological war against Cuba through Operation Pluto using Radio Swan. In 1962 he directed psychological war against Cuba through Operation Mongoose. In 1963 he directed subversive actions against Cuba from the US embassy in Mexico. In 1965 he acted as the head of the CIA office in Santa Domingo. In 1972 he directed undercover acts against Chilean President Salvador Allende. In 1975 he held the position of chief of the Western Hemisphere division of the CIA. He quit the CIA in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal.
