Democratic National Unity Party
One of the most active anti-Cuba terrorist groups during the first half of the 1990s, engaging in a wide array of criminal, subversive and terrorist actions against Cuba.
The organization was founded on October 10, 1989 and disbanded in 1997 after a clash between it leaders. Its principal figure was Sergio Francisco Gonzalez Rosquete.
It carried out its first terrorist and paramilitary actions against Cuba in alliance with the so-called National Liberation Army headed by the infamous terrorist Higinio Diaz in 1991, when internal contradictions led to a separation.
The organization was known for having considerable resources, some supplied by the Cuban American National Foundation. Some of its leaders were closely linked to the drug trade.
Specialists believe this was a trademark of the group since many people believe the PUND closely combined its terrorist acts with drug trafficking. They were investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) but were rarely charged.
Actions Against Cuba
The main actions against Cuba took place in 1990.
- An attempt to infiltrate Gustavo Rodriguez Sosa and Tomas Ramos Rodriguez, two Cuban-born terrorists residing in the [[Category:United States|United States, into Santa Cruz del Norte. Their objectives were to carry out violent acts including assassinating president Fidel Castro and his brother Raul Castro, establish support for future infiltrations, sabotaging communications, and other actions contributing to the fall of the Revolution. To achieve their intentions they introduced hand guns and other weapons. One of the infiltrators stated that he had been recruited by the terrorist Higinio Diaz and by Sergio Gonzalez Rosquete himself. He was a Miami resident and had been provided with a boat, arms and other supplies. Another of the terrorists said he was also recruited by Higinio Diaz and trained in the use of plastic explosives and other activities in the Everglades and at a house located on the South West side of Miami.
- Throughout 1992 they would try to realize other armed infiltrations into the country.
- 1992. An illegal entry occurred at Carbo Beach in Sancti Spiritus where Miguel Angel Alfonso Gonzalez, Eduardo Gonzalez Torres and Gustavo David Torna Aguado were arrested.
- 1993. Ruben Dario Lopez Castro, Ivan Leon Rojas and Jesus Morales Garcia were detained in Cuban waters. They had traveled on a yacht called the Nautius, and declared they had left the yacht on an inflatable raft, without knowing where they were going as they didn’t know their exact whereabouts. In the revision of the yacht in Bahamas the authorities found a Max-10 rifle with a silencer, a large quantity of ammunition, plastic C-4 explosives and other military means. In March of that year there was an exchange of gunfire with members of the PUND in a U.S. city, and rumors said they had to do with drug trafficking activities.
- On October 15, 1994 a new infiltration took place in the municipality of Caibarien in the province of Villa Clara that took the life of Arsenio Rodriguez Garcia. Early in the morning that day, a group of seven terrorists,-all members of the PUND-infiltrated into the country from the United States. In the process of commandeering an auto for their use to move inland, one of the terrorists shot and killed a Cuban who was driving in his car. Shortly after, the seven were captured along with five AK-47 rifles, an AR-15 rifle, an M-145, four pistols and other weaponry. The detainees stated they had been recruited by the PUND in 1993-4 and that they received military training in several camps located in Florida. Their goal was to infiltrate Cuba, establish themselves in the Escambray Mountains, and organize armed bands to carry out destabilization actions. They were all residents of Miami. One of these individuals also stated that he had been recruited in a park located on 8th and 13th streets in Miami, where an office of the PUND had opened to recruit volunteers to fight in Cuba. At the Evergaldes, the learned how to use weapons, took part in nighttime marches, and at that time, the PUND also had a clandestine training camp which they were taken to in closed vehicles.
- On July 12, 1995 three terrorists with 12 pounds of C-4 explosives were detained in Cayo Hueso, Florida. They had planned to infiltrate the island in the central part of the country.
- On February 11, 1996 a speed boat attack occurred in the Bay of Cardenas, Matanzas. Three Cuban-born terrorists, that were also members of this organization, were detained. They had penetrated the Bay of Cardenas in a Formula speed boat that had departed from Marathon Key in Florida and entered on the south side of Varadero in front of the Melia Las Americas Hotel. Before they were captured, the terrorists distributed subversive propaganda on the coast, signed by the PUND, and fired two AK-47 automatic rifles in the direction of the Melia tourist installation. They stated their action was designed to cause confusion and panic amongst national and foreign tourists and the general population. They said they were recruited by Sergio Gonzalez Rosquete at the PUND offices on 215 17th Street and Second Avenue, apartments 201 and 202 in Miami, Florida. Lastly, in June 1997, Gonzalez Rosquete joined the terrorist organization Resistencia Nacional Cubana (Cuban National Resistance), whose main leader is the terrorist Nelsy Ignacio Castro Matos.
