September 4, 1997: detonations of explosive devices in the Tritón, Chateau-Miramar and Copacabana hotels. A young Italian tourist, Fabio Di Celmo, died as a result of the explosion in the Copacabana. The mercenary Raúl Ernesto Cruz León, a Salvadorean citizen and resident of El Salvador, was detained as the person reponsible for causing explosions in the hotels. On June 12, 1997, he had been recruited and trained by Francisco Chávez Abarca, a Salvadorean in El Salvador, under the guidance and with the financial support of Luis Clemente Posada Carriles.
