The Torture of Daniel Alvarado

In 1983 members of the Treasury Police of El Salvador kidnapped Daniel Alvarado and falsely accused him of the assassination of American military Attaché Lieutenant Commander Albert Schaufelberger. Alvarado was tortured and forced to confess to the crime. As director of the Treasury Police, Colonel Nicolas Carranza contact with Alvarado on several occasions, including during a press conference. Later on, U.S. officials interviewed Alvarado, submitted him to a polygraph, and concluded that he was forced to confess to the assassination because of torture.
